SEPI Ranks as ENR Top 500 Design Firm Yet Again – Here’s Why
We’re celebrating our third consecutive ranking on the Top 500 Design Firms List by Engineering News-Record.
SEPI is up 35 spots this year to #369 based on revenue in millions for design services. With 350+ employees and $39.3 million in revenue in 2018, SEPI continues to dazzle.
There’s no one secret to success in a competitive marketplace, but we’re definitely doing something right. A comparison of company success indicators from ENR’s Top 500 Design Firms: The Market Keeps Growing article reflects four key areas where SEPI remains ahead of the curve.
1. Serving Municipal Client Needs
SEPI strategically increased our municipal client roster over the past several years as the demand for infrastructure improvements continues to grow. Municipal clients utilize Federal Grants and/or Capital Improvement Programs to identify, prioritize, and allocate funds for infrastructure projects.
With allocated funds comes the responsibility to manage projects successfully. Our municipal clients turn to SEPI to serve as an extension of staff. Working in partnership, our depth of services and resources helps municipal clients bring their project vision to life.
We work to relieve clients of their project headaches by offering best practices in program management with streamlined project phasing, budget control, and schedule adherence.
From early project planning stages, to design tasks, to construction administration, SEPI provides scaled solutions for complex on-call task orders and large stand-alone projects that improve the built environment in our community.
2. Alternative Project Delivery
Remaining adaptable in a constantly changing industry is critical to our success as a company. As alternative project delivery methods have gained ground, SEPI has evolved our services to meet the call.
The design-build delivery method is one such example. Use of the design-build delivery method has increased as clients realize its benefits. When managed effectively, there are many benefits to the design-build process including increased quality and decreased schedule and cost overruns.
SEPI has served on more than 25 design-build improvement projects across the state such as the I-85 Design-Build (I-3802A) project with the NCDOT. We understand the fast-paced alternative delivery environment and continue to raise the bar on our own expectations of what we can accomplish when working together.
3. Attracting Talent
SEPI continually seeks to improve the way we operate. Employee satisfaction is no exception, in fact, it’s a priority. It’s a key reason we’ve been able to grow organically to more than 350 employees since our founding in 2001.
Part of fostering a supportive work environment includes the willingness to be inclusive. We’re proud to offer a challenging yet supportive work environment based on our unique Values + Team Culture, where employees are encouraged to be themselves and grow to their full potential.
Embracing diversity makes good business sense as well. To this end, SEPI formed a dedicated Diversity Committee to help improve our attraction and retention of diverse employees.
SEPI also offers many entry-level opportunities for recent graduates or people considering a career change. We understand that talent comes in many different forms and is not dependent on experience alone. We want employees to grow with us, no matter if they have two years of experience or twenty.
To further strengthen and advance our goals for employee recruitment and retention, SEPI recently welcomed Steve Moore, PE as Director of Growth + Development. Steve is tasked with developing and executing strategic initiatives focused on the Operational Excellence Pillar of SEPI’s Vision 2021 plan. This includes company Growth + Development initiatives such as internal training and employee recruitment. With our depth of current staff and the potential for future talent, the sky’s the limit.
4. Utilizing Technology
SEPI’s team of industry thought leaders and technical experts utilize technology on a daily basis to streamline processes and achieve client objectives. When we work smarter, it benefits both our team and our clients. Improved efficiencies in project management reduces rework and fosters better teamwork and collaboration.
SEPI frequently uses advanced 3D modeling and dynamic visualization technology for design on Transportation sector projects. For example, by utilizing 3D models of proposed corridor improvements, SEPI can determine impacts and evaluate alternatives ‘on the fly’ rather than through an iterative design process. The streamlined process achieved through technology reduces time and effort without compromising quality.
Technology is an important tool for Geomatics as well. SEPI deploys high definition 3D laser scanning technology to collect as many as 30,000 data points per second. This produces highly accurate point clouds. High definition 3D laser scanning helps eliminate return site visits to capture missed data and limits the need for traffic control measures. It also creates a safer environment for the surveyor as the equipment can be operated remotely using WiFi.
Evaluating tech trends and emerging technologies can significantly change our standards and perceptions of what’s possible in the near future. Examples of emerging technologies in Traffic services include connected and automated vehicles (CAVs), big data, artificial intelligence (AI), smart cities, and shared mobility to name a few.
At SEPI, we look forward to continued growth ahead. Let’s work together! Contact us today for your project needs.
