The City Walk project includes construction of a 12’ wide concrete multi-use path parallel to Main Avenue, extending approximately 1.64-miles from 9th Street through the heart of downtown Hickory.

City Walk will serve to enhance the downtown experience for citizens, students, and visitors; encourage economic growth; and provide physical wellness benefits. Proposed features include a new prefabricated pedestrian bridge at 3rd Street, an enhanced signature bridge at 2nd Street, and a new roundabout at 3rd Avenue.

SEPI is providing construction administration and inspections for roadway, structures, erosion control, materials sampling, and claims avoidance. Technicians are responsible for uploading inspections reports, daily diaries, pay application reviews, change orders, materials tracking, and project documents to a web-based document control system to help facilitate full Federal-funding reimbursement for the City.

City Walk will also include substantial landscaping, pedestrian lighting, and a fence protecting the public from the Norfolk Southern Railroad line that runs parallel to Main Avenue where applicable. The nature of the work zone areas will require detours for pedestrians through the entire length of the project.

Extensive utility coordination and stakeholder coordination with downtown businesses along the corridor will be an important factor on this exciting project. The project is being partially funded by NCDOT and will be required to meet minimum requirements for Federal reimbursement.
