Environmental Scientist Intern

The Planning and Environmental Department within the SEPI Engineering & Construction, Inc. Raleigh Office is seeking a part-time environmental scientist to assist with wetland/stream assessments and permitting, threatened and endangered species surveys. The ideal candidate is self-motivated, able to travel overnight if needed, and comfortable working in palustrine and riverine environments.

Responsibilities include assisting with the following tasks or similar duties:

  • Wetland and stream delineations
  • Threatened and endangered species surveys (e. g. plants, freshwater mussels, fish, and crayfish)
  • Aquatic surveys using tactile, snorkeling, and SCUBA methods in freshwater
  • GIS mapping, data analysis, report preparation, 401/404/CAMA permitting

Preferred Licensing/Certifications and Experience:

  • SCUBA Open Water Certification and experience with freshwater aquatic species surveys

Other Information:

The work schedule and scope is somewhat flexible, depending on the project needs. Tasks and hours will vary each week. This internship is from August 1 to December 31, 2022.

Education and Requirements:

  • Graduate, Bachelor’s, or student working towards degree in Botany, Natural Resources, Forestry, Soil Science, Hydrology, Zoology, Biology, Environmental Science, or similar and 4+ years of experience

Additional Knowledge, Skills and Ability Requirements:

  • Current valid NC Driver’s License
  • NCDOT or similar state DOT experience
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, and GIS Software
  • Self-motivated, detail oriented, and able to handle multiple tasks as assigned
  • Time management with the ability to work independently and communicate well with others
  • Must have a professional demeanor, strong work ethic and ability to interact with multi-discipline and multi-office teams

Working Conditions and Physical/Mental Demands:

  • Talk, hear, use hands and fingers to handle or feel, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach
  • Ability to lift/push/pull up to 50 pounds occasionally
  • Indoor office environment with moderate noise levels 10-70% of the time depending on the time of year and field season schedules
  • Travel via personal automobile on occasion as needed
